(VIS) – This morning, the Holy Father Benedict XVI received in
audience His Excellency Mr. Traian Basescu, president of Romania.
President Basescu then met with Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, S.D.B.,
secretary of State of His Holiness, accompanied by Archbishop
Dominique Mamberti, secretary for Relations with States.
During
the talks, which were held in a cordial atmosphere, the good
relations between Romania and the Holy See were discussed. In
particular, the successful cooperation on a European level to
safeguard common values was highlighted and prospects for cooperation
between the Catholic Church and the Romanian State in the area of
education were addressed.
Issues
continuously affecting Catholic communities in Romania were not
overlooked and the Catholic Church's contribution in integrating
Romanian communities abroad was given recognition.
