HOLY SEE PRESS OFFICE DIRECTOR ON DEATH OF OSAMA BIN LADEN

VATICAN CITY, 2 MAY 2011 (VIS) - This morning the Director of the Holy See Press Office, Fr. Federico Lombardi, S.J., released the following declaration on the news regarding the death of Osama Bin Laden.

"Osama Bin Laden, as is known, claimed responsibility for grave acts that spread division and hate among the peoples, manipulating religion to that end. A Christian never takes pleasure from the fact of a man's death, but sees it as an opportunity to reflect on each person's responsibility, before God and humanity, and to hope and commit oneself to seeing that no event become another occasion to disseminate hate but rather to foster peace".

  1. We should also reflect that this is condign retribution for the slaughter of Christians in Baghdad last October, and this year in Alexandria, and at many other times and places throughout the Islamic world.

God always punishes those who persecute and kill His people and who blaspheme His Name by taking Him as a witness against His own revelation.

  2. We in the West, though relieved that Osama himself is no longer a threat, must reflect on the fact that we have destroyed millions of lnnocent lives through the murder of the unborn. We are all in need of repentence and God's forgiveness and mercy. Also, with God all things are possible, even the conversion of a determined extremist. For example Saint Paul's conversion, having been determined to stamp out Christianity.

  5. One must thing of the Peace of Christ, and the love of Christ, even on what we see as the un-lovable.
I have no say on Osama`s, soul, thats between God and Him, but we must as Saint Paul beautifully writes, work on our own salvation with fear and trembling.
What we as faithful Catholics should do, is pray for unity amongst nations rather then hatred.
