VATICAN CITY, OCT 3, 2001 (VIS) - The Holy Father:

- Accepted the resignation of Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Crescent McKinney from the pastoral care of Grand Rapids, U.S.A., in conformity with canons 411 and 401, para. 2, of the Code of Canon Law.

- Appointed Archbishop Eusebio Oscar Scheid, S.C.I., of Sao Sebastiao do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, as ordinary for the Catholic faithful of the Eastern rite resident in Brazil and supervised by their proper ordinary. He succeeds Cardinal Eugenio de Araujo Sales, archbishop emeritus of Sao Sebastiao do Rio de Janeiro, whose resignation the Holy Father canonically accepted.
