VATICAN CITY, MAR 7, 2000 (VIS) - The Holy Father:

- Appointed Bishop Ruben Hector Di Monte of Avellaneda, Argentina, as archbishop of Mercedes-Lujan (area 19,330, population 530,000, Catholics 509,000, priests 104, permanent deacons 1, religious 220), Argentina. The archbishop-elect was born in Lujan, Argentina, in 1932, ordained a priest in 1954 and consecrated bishop in 1980. He succeeds Archbishop Emilio Ognenovich, whose resignation from the pastoral care of the same archdiocese the Holy Father accepted, upon having reached the age limit.

- Appointed Cardinal Edward Idris Cassidy, president of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, as his special envoy to celebrations marking the millennium of Christianity in Iceland. The event is due to take place at Reykjavik, Iceland, from July 1 to 2.
