"Upon learning with deep regret the sad news of the plane crash which took place near that capital and which has filled numerous families with grief, His Holiness John Paul II offers prayers for the repose of the souls of those who died and raises his prayers to the Lord that He may grant consolation and spiritual serenity to those who mourn the loss of their loved ones.
"I ask Your Excellency to convey the Holy Father's condolences to the victims' family members and to express to them his paternal concern and his feelings of closeness, at the same time that he imparts to them the comforting Apostolic Blessing as a sign of hope in the Risen Christ."
