VATICAN CITY, SEP 5, 2000 (VIS) - John Paul II sent a telegram to Archbishop Juan Luis Cipriani of Lima, Peru, to mark the death yesterday at the age of 77 of Cardinal Augusto Vargas Alzamora S.J., archbishop emeritus of the same archdiocese:
"On learning the sad news of the death of Cardinal Augusto Vargas Alzamora S.J., archbishop emeritus of Lima, Peru, I, together with the faithful of that diocesan community where he assiduously exercised his pastoral ministry, raise fervent prayers to God that He may grant eternal rest to one who was for many years His diligent pastor.
"Recalling his selfless pastoral activity and his faithfulness to Christ and to Peter's Successor, I express my heartfelt condolences to you, to the auxiliary bishop, to the clergy, to religious communities and to the faithful of that much-loved archdiocese. Upon you all, as upon those who attend the funeral Mass, I bestow the comfort of an Apostolic blessing as a sign of Christian faith and hope in the Risen Lord."
