VATICAN CITY, MAY 7, 2002 (VIS) - Msgr. Piero Monni, Holy See permanent observer to the World Tourism Organization, is scheduled to attend the three-day WTO meeting that starts tomorrow in Dubrovnik, Croatia on the theme "The Tourist Image of European Destinations on Competitive International Markets."
According to a communique released by Msgr. Monni, the agenda for the 39th meeting of the WTO's Commission for Europe will also include discussions and updates on the International Year of Ecological Tourism, and tourism in general, in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks in the United States. In addition, the application of the principles established by the World Code of Ethics for Tourism will be discussed, aimed at forming a World Committee of Ethics for Tourism.
Msgr. Monni will address the assembly on May 9. The communique says that his talk will underscore the need to pay constant attention to respecting the principles of sustainable tourism, which must include respect for moral values. He will also underline the contribution brought by the tourism phenomenon to the building of a common "European house."
