OTHER PONTIFICAL ACTS


VATICAN CITY, JUN 3, 2005 (VIS) - The Holy Father appointed Archbishop Stanislaw Dziwisz, adjunct prefect of the Pontifical Household, as metropolitan archbishop of Krakow (area 5,730, population 1,618,593, Catholics 1,566,555, priests 2,026, religous 4,841), Poland. The metropolitan archbishop-elect was born in Raba Wyzna, Poland, in 1939. From 1966 to 1978 he acted as private secretary to Archbishop Karol Wojtyla of Krakow and, following the latter's election as Pope John Paul II, continued to act as his private secretary throughout his pontificate from 1978 to 2005. He was ordained a bishop by John Paul II in 1998 and elevated to the dignity of archbishop in 2003. He succeeds Cardinal Franciszek Macharski, whose resignation from the pastoral care of the same archdiocese was accepted by the Holy Father, upon having reached the age limit.

    - Cardinal Wilfred Fox Napier O.F.M., archbishop of Durban, South Africa, and apostolic administrator "sede vacante et ad nutum Sanctae Sedis" of Umzimkulu, South Africa, accompanied by Auxiliary Bishop Jabulani Nxumalo O.M.I.

    - Bishop Michael Gower Coleman of Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

    - Bishop Michael Vincent Paschal Rowland O.F.M., of Dundee, South Africa.

    - Bishop William Slattery O.F.M., of Kokstad, South Africa.

    - Bishop Oswald Georg Hirmer of Umtata, South Africa.

 - Two prelates of the Lesotho Catholic Bishops' Conference, on their "ad limina" visit:

    - Archbishop Bernard Mohlalisi O.M.I., of Maseru.

    - Bishop Paul Khoarai of Leribe.

  This evening, he is scheduled to receive Archbishop William Joseph Levada, emeritus of San Francisco, U.S.A., and prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, accompanied by Archbishop Angelo Amato S.D.B., secretary of the same congregation.
