MSGR. PIERO MONNI SPEAKS ON SUSTAINABLE TOURISM

VATICAN CITY, APR 13, 1999 (VIS) - Msgr. Piero Monni, Holy See permanent observer to the World Tourism Organization, gave a speech at midday today during the 18th meeting of this organization's Technical Committee of Programming and Coordination, which is being held in Madrid, Spain.

Msgr. Monni said that to be able to speak of sustainable tourism "some basic principles should always be maintained." These are: "ecological sustainability, which assures development compatible with the preservation of essential ecological processes; ... social and cultural sustainability, which maintains and consolidates the identity of communities; economic sustainability, which assures economically efficient development and resource management so that their conservation might be guaranteed for future generations."

"The problem of the guarantee of quality in tourism," he continued, "is fundamentally relevant. ... It is important to reflect on policies which must be adopted to improve this sector, and on the code of conduct which the world of tourism wishes to give; rules of behavior which are valid both for those working in this sector and for tourists. Thus, it would be particularly fitting to continue with the debate on the drafting of a Global Code of Ethics in Tourism."
