- Hugo Chavez Frias, president of the Republic of Venezuela, accompanied by his entourage.
- Archbishop Mario Zenari, apostolic nuncio in the Ivory Coast, Niger, Burkina Faso.
- Archbishop Ivan Jurkovic, apostolic nuncio in Belarus.
- Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, prefect of the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith.
He also received the following participants of the Synod of Bishops:
- Cardinal Geraldo Majella Agnelo, archbishop of Sao Salvador de Bahia, Brazil.
- Cardinal Claudio Hummes, O.F.M., archbishop of Sao Paulo, Brazil.
- Archbishop Francisco Viti of Huambo, Angola.
- Archbishop Luciano Pedro Mendes De Almeida, S.J., of Mariana, Brazil.
- Archbishop Eusebio Oscar Scheid, S.C.I., of Sao Sebastiao do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
