VATICAN CITY, NOV 9, 2000 (VIS) - The Holy Father appointed:
- Fr. Jude Paulraj of the clergy of Tirchirapalli, rector of the major regional Christ Hall Seminary at Madurai, as bishop of Palayamkottai (area 6,102, population 2,373,295, Catholics 107,120, priests 88, religious 83), India. The bishop-elect was born in 1943 in Pazhayakovil, India, and ordained a priest in 1968.
- Fr. Alfonso Milian Sorribas, episcopal vicar in Zaragoza (area 13,309, population 794,000, Catholics 770,000, priests 711, religious 2,500), Spain, as auxiliary bishop of the same archdiocese. The bishop-elect was born in la Cuba, Spain, in 1939 and ordained a priest in 1962.
- Archbishop Leonardo Sandri, substitute for General Affairs, as consultor of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and as counsellor of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America.
- As ordinary members of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences: Antonino Zichichi, professor of physics at the University of Bologna, Italy; Rafael Vicuna, professor of molecular biology at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, and Mario Jose Molina, professor of atmospheric chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, U.S.A.
