VATICAN CITY, MAY 9, 2001 (VIS) - The Holy Father:

- Accepted the resignation of Bishop Alphonsus Augustus Sowada, O.S.C., from the pastoral care of Agats, Indonesia, in conformity with canon 401, para. 2, of the Code of Canon Law.

- Appointed Canon Aloys Jousten, episcopal vicar of the diocese of Liege (area 3,862, population 1,016,762, Catholics 700,000, priests 650, permanent deacons 74, religious 1,009), Belgium, as bishop of the same diocese. He succeeds Bishop Albert Houssiau, whose resignation from the pastoral care of the same diocese the Holy Father accepted in accordance with the age limit. The bishop-elect was born in Saint-Vith, Belgium in 1937, and ordained to the priesthood in 1962.
