POPE THANKS PRO PETRI SEDE FOR ANNUAL DONATION

VATICAN CITY, OCT 12, 2000 (VIS) - Pope John Paul this morning welcomed members of the "Pro Petri Sede" Association, in Rome on their Jubilee Year pilgrimage and to present the Pope with their annual donation. Members are from the Benelux countries of Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg.

Addressing them in French and Dutch, the Holy Father said that "we are called to transmit the love we receive from the Lord to those around us, thus effecting a witness to our faith, which is an eloquent sign in the eyes of the world. From this point of view your gesture is especially important and necessary to show the mercy of God: it proceeds from 'charity, which opens our eyes to the needs of those who live in poverty and on the margins', and motivates us to live as brothers, beyond any differences in race, culture and religion."

The Pope concluded by be expressing his "thanks and gratitude" to the members of the Pro Petri Sede Association who, he said, "in welcoming strangers and the poor, live the Gospel ideal of mutual spiritual and material help."
