HOLY SEE ADDRESSES CONSULTATION ON HUMANITARIAN ISSUES

VATICAN CITY, MAR 16, 2000 (VIS) - Archbishop Agostino Marchetto, apostolic nuncio, permanent observer of the Holy See to FAO, IFAD and the WFP, and head of the Holy See delegation at the "Consultation on Humanitarian Issues: Situation of Displacement: Issues and Experience," spoke this morning in Rome at this conference organized by the World Food Program.

The archbishop said "the Holy See recognizes the considerable efforts made by the international community" and by non-governmental organizations to assist refugees and internally displaced persons. He also remarked on their efforts to give basic assistance, to alleviate conditions, and to eliminate the causes of displacement.

He remarked that "among the actors in the field of our attention today, we do not want to forget the Church's organizations and workers who, in addition to aid collection and distribution, are involved in other activities that are an integral part of protecting human dignity. ... They (are) a presence, even when aid organizations leave, ... for community building, education, advocacy for rights and activities that promote physical, psychological and spiritual well-being."
