JUBILEE CELEBRATION OF THE MOST PRECIOUS BLOOD OF CHRIS

T
VATICAN CITY, JUL 1, 2000 (VIS) - Following a Mass this morning in St. Peter's Square, presided over by Cardinal Secretary of State Angelo Sodano in the presence of tens of thousands of pilgrims, Pope John Paul greeted the members of the male and female religious families and Catholic associations dedicated to the worship of the Most Precious Blood of Jesus.

The Pope recalled that up to Vatican Council II "the mystery of the Most Precious Blood of Christ was celebrated liturgically throughout the Catholic Church on July 1" but that "Pope Paul VI linked the feast of the Blood of Christ to that of His body in the solemnity now known as 'The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ'."

"The Jubilee Year," he went on, "gives new impulse to a most significant devotion. In fact, as we celebrate Christ's birth at a distance of 2000 years, we are also invited to contemplate and adore Him in the most holy humanity which He took on in Mary's womb, joined hypostatically to the Divine Person of the Word. If Christ's blood is a precious font of salvation for the world, that cOmes precisely from His being the Word made flesh for our salvation."

John Paul II said that Christ's sacrifice on the Cross "inspires us ... to give our lives for God and our brothers without reserve 'usque ad effusione, sanguinis' (up to the shedding of blood), as did so many martyrs. How can we not recognize repeatedly the value of every human being when, for each one, without distinction, Christ has shed His blood?"

Before closing, the Holy Father greeted the pilgrims from the diocese of Bergamo, Italy, recalling their fellow citizen, and his predecessor, the late Pope John XXIII. "May the path of prayer and meditation which leads you to Jubilee sites," he said, "be an occasion for you to reaffirm your convinced adhesion to Christ, the 'Holy Door', to enter into the Kingdom of God."

A CALL TO PENANCE, ASCETICISM, DETACHMENT FROM THE WORLD

VATICAN CITY, JUL 3, 2000 (VIS) - Pope John Paul this morning welcomed the Minim Friars, founded by St. Francis de Paola over 500 years ago, who are celebrating their General Chapter in Rome. St. Francis also founded the Minim Fathers and Minim Nuns.

In his speech, he highlighted their "glorious past history" as well as "the glorious history (you have) yet to build." Quoting from the Order's constitution, he said that, "following the example of your founder, your religious family 'proposes to give particular and daily witness to Gospel penance with a Lenten-like life, such as total conversion to God, intimate participation in the expiation of Christ and a call to the Gospel values of detachment from the world, of the primacy of spirit over matter and of the urgency of penance, which carries with it the practice of charity, love of prayer and physical asceticism'."

In particular, the Holy Father underlined the order's "fourth vow of perpetual Lent" and noted that the theme of their General Chapter "proposes contemplating anew the charism of Lenten penance, in the light of the challenges of today's world." He highlighted the importance of renunciation and penance, especially today when "the dominant tendency in contemporary society .... is to seek immediate gratification."

He urged the Minims to develop ever more deeply the spirit and charism of their founder, saying: "May your Order, after having overcome difficult moments in the course of its history, continue to be the light which illumines the penitents of the Church."

POPE PRAYS FOR VICTIMS OF INDONESIAN FERRYBOAT SINKING

VATICAN CITY, JUL 2, 2000 (VIS) - After praying the noon angelus today, Pope John Paul had greetings for numerous groups present in St. Peter's Square. Among those he saluted were bicyclists, gymnasts, members of the St. Louis Oratory from Como, Italy, a musical group, horseback riders, an estimated several thousand motorcyclists and young people from Italian dioceses who had travelled on a pilgrimage to Mount Adamello in preparation for next month's World Youth Day.

He then mentioned that he had "just learned in this very moment the news that, unfortunately, the ferryboat which disappeared three days ago in the Indonesia archipelago of the Moluccas has sunk, with an estimated 500 passengers aboard. I express great sorrow for the victims and I pray the Lord to grant them eternal reward and I invoke upon everyone with all my strength peace and security for those islands tormented by violence."

BLOOD OF JESUS CAN HEAL THE VIOLENCE, HATRED IN THE WORLD

VATICAN CITY, JUL 2, 2000 (VIS) - This morning, before praying the angelus with the tens of thousands of faithful gathered in St. Peter's Square, below his study window, John Paul II reflected on the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Blood of Christ. He also denounced the violence and hatred in the world which lead to bloodshed.

"The Heart of Jesus," he said, "contains a message for every person; it also speaks to the world today. In a society where techniques and computer technology develop at ever increasing rates, and where one is assailed by a thousand, often conflicting interests, man risks losing the center, his own center. By showing us His Heart, Jesus reminds us above all that it is there, in the most intimate part of the person, that each one's destiny is decided, death or life in a definitive sense."

The Pope then pointed out that "the Blood of Christ redeemed us. Here is the truth which, precisely yesterday, at the start of July, traditionally dedicated to the Most Precious Blood of Christ, we proclaimed on the occasion of the Jubilee of the 'Sanguis Christi' Union."
"How much blood has been unjustly shed in the world!" he then exclaimed. "How much violence, how much disdain for human life! Mankind today, often wounded by hatred and violence, needs, more than ever to experience the efficacy of the redeeming blood of Christ. That blood, which was not shed in vain, carries within it the power of God's love and the pledge of hope, redemption, reconciliation."
