OPENING OF THE HOLY DOOR AT ST. PAUL'S OUTSIDE THE WALLS

VATICAN CITY, JAN 11, 2000 (VIS) - In the Holy See Press Office on Friday, January 14, Cardinal Roger Etchegaray, president of the Central Committee for the Great Jubilee 2000, will preside at a press conference on the opening of the Holy Door at the basilica of St. Paul's Outside the Walls, which is due to take place on January 18.

Also participating in the conference will be Archbishop Crescenzio Sepe, secretary general of the Central Committee for the Great Jubilee 2000 and Bishops Walter Kasper and Piero Marini, respectively secretary of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity and master of Pontifical Liturgical Ceremonies.

ARCHBISHOP CORDES TO VISIT TAIWAN FROM JANUARY 11 TO 18

VATICAN CITY, JAN 11, 2000 (VIS) - Archbishop Paul Josef Cordes, president of the Pontifical Council "Cor Unum," will go to the Republic of China (Taiwan) from January 11 to 18. He is to visit the population affected by the earthquake which, last September 21, devastated the area around Taichung.

Archbishop Cordes will transmit a greeting from the Holy Father to the almost 300,000 Catholics who live on the island. Furthermore, he will make a speech on inculturation, one of the central themes of the Asian synod.

The president of the Republic of China, Lee Teng-hui, will present the "Order of the Brilliant Star" to Archbishop Cordes. The award is being given in recognition for the work carried out by "Cor Unum" worldwide in support of the human and Christian development of all people, and for the work of other Catholic bodies in this sector.
